How Gift Giving Can Help Retain Employees
Corrina Cornforth
The holiday season is right around the corner and with it brings the opportunity to show employees how much you appreciate their hard work and efforts. Thoughtful gift giving is a wonderful ay to promote employee morale and can also double as a retention strategy. After all, who wouldn't want to work for a company where they feel appreciated? When choosing appropriate gifts, you should first determine what it is you want the gift to say. Do you want it to motivate and encourage further efforts, show appreciation for a job well done or perhaps recognize long service? Once you know the intended message of the gift, it is important to match the gift(s) to your employees. That is not to say you should choose individual gifts for every employee (a daunting task if you have a large employee base), but be mindful that just because you happen to be a hockey fanatic that doesn't necessarily mean your employees will appreciate that Bobby Orr replica jersey.
Gift choices can also reflect your company's core values; a company geared towards eco-sustainability could give a double-walled porcelain travel mug with silicon lid (the 100% eco-friendly replacement to the paper/styrofoam to-go cup) or a USB eco-button (one press of the button puts your computer into sleep mode to conserve energy). A company that puts the emphasis on family could give a digital picture frame or a stainless steel BBQ tool set while a company focused on safety could give a roadside assistance kit or hand-crank emergency waterproof radio. There are also the old standbys that give just about anyone a "warm fuzzy" when received; an embroidered lambs wool throw blanket, an imprinted executive umbrella, a USB-powered coffee mug warmer, a Bluetooth hands free device and let's not forget the power and persuasion of chocolate. Whether it is a sign of appreciation, an incentive for top performance or recognition for long service, a carefully selected corporate gift is a thoughtful way to say thank you and show employees how much you value them.
